The History of Gulf in Motorsport
Wetherby-based Gulf Retail recently invited staff and customers to the book launch of Blue & Orange, written by journalist and motor racing historian Michael Cotton and detailing the history of Gulf's highly successful involvement in Motorsport. The launch party took place at Ottakar's bookshop, Cheltenham, chosen because of Gulf's historical links with the Town.
Around 120 people attended the event including current and former Gulf employees, customers and enthusiasts. Special guests included the author, Gulf's 1996 FIA GT World Champion racing driver James Weaver and two of the most famous cars in the history of sportscar racing, a Ford GT40 and Porsche 917, in Gulf's familiar powder blue and orange livery.
The glossy large format book includes driver recollections, a chapter on Steve McQueen and the making of the Le Mans movie, and 250 images - some of which have never been published before. The book has already been acclaimed by the specialist Motorsport press and advance orders have been received from as far away as Japan and the United States.
Richard Owen-Hughes, Gulf Retail: "It was a very special occasion, if somewhat surreal, to think that the fastest growing independent forecourt brand is now taking an interest in the literary world! For our retailers and staff it was an opportunity to socialise with others who are passionate about the brand and enjoy their recollections. Our day-to-day focus is always on the future and an occasion like this enabled us all to celebrate the heritage and appreciate more fully why the Gulf brand is so positively perceived around the world."
