Although relative newcomers to retailing, Ullswater Road Garage, Penrith is now a community beacon, visited by all ages and types - for fuel, beer, nappies, fresh fruit or even a ‘Meatball Marinara’!
The family run business provides an excellent example of how to bring a series of strong retail brands together – Gulf, Throrougoods, Subway – to create a highly profitable outlet as Jenny Haselden, Director explains.
“We took over the site in 2006 and immediately set about listening and learning, on and off forecourt. We have always been prepared to invest in the business with improved facilities and experienced staff.
“In March 2007, with annual fuel sales at 1.1million litres and a turnover of £480,000 from a 500ft2 shop, we undertook a major investment, creating a 1200ft2 convenience store, secured an alcohol license, introduced chilled and frozen foods and 24-hour opening.
“By December 2008, fuel volumes had doubled and shop sales exceeded £800,000. Identifying and satisfying customer needs is our goal. Feedback is encouraged and recently resulted in the introduction of fresh produce from local butchers and farmers. Off-site, we advertise and distribute leaflets with special offers every six weeks. On-site, offers are supported by tactical and eye-catching POS and creative floor and rack displays.
“Encouraged by the results, the shop size was doubled and Subway introduced with seating for 20. Supported throughout by Gulf, fuel sales have increased threefold, shop turnover is now £1.3m.”
