Proposed ban on forecourt alcohol dismissed
Operators free to continue on-site sales
Forecourt retailers have been boosted by the news that the House of Lords have dismissed an amendment prohibiting the sale of alcohol in forecourts.
The Association of Convenience Stores (ACS) had contacted peers and set out the case against the proposal – part of the Committee stage of the Police Reform and Social Responsibility Bill.
"It is heartening when parliamentarians are open-minded and listen to the arguments presented” comments Chief Executive James Lowman “Modern forecourts provide a range of services to the community, this includes the responsible sale of alcohol products."
"I certainly sympathise with bodies like the ACS, which says that there is no evidence that licensed forecourts are less responsible than any other type of premises.” states Lord Clement-Jones.
“I’m glad that common sense has prevailed,” explains Keith Jewers, Director, Gulf Retail. “Supplementary income to that from fuel sales has become vital to forecourt operators.”
“Gulf’s in store consultancy programme has helped transform many seasoned petrol retailers into accomplished, dependable convenience store operators, the dismissal of this proposal will rightly allow them to continue selling alcohol conscientiously.”
ACS is continuing its work with the Government throughout the passage of the Bill to ensure that the interests of forecourt retailers are promoted.
