When you're racing, it's life
McQueen movie’s 40th anniversary
It was in 1971 that the Gulf brand achieved iconic status with the launch of the film ‘Le Mans’ starring Steve McQueen, in which his character, Michael Delaney, raced the Gulf-liveried Porsche 917 at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, leading the team to a one-two finish.
For longtime fans of the world’s oldest and most celebrated motorsport endurance event, Gulf colours still conjure memories of cult figure McQueen and the stunning 917 that carried the famous baby blue and orange design.
40 years on from its cinema release, the movie remains a classic for racing and McQueen enthusiasts alike, highlighting the special relationship Gulf still enjoys with the Circuit de la Sarthe and an event that has captured the imaginations of competitors and supporters alike since its debut back in 1923.
“A lot of people go through life doing things badly. Racing's important to men who do it well. When you're racing, it's life. Anything that happens before or after is just waiting.” – Michael Delaney.
