Keeping it in the family
Worboys celebrate 75th milestones
Worboys Garage in Gamlingay, Bedfordshire is celebrating 75 years of operation. What’s more, the same family has run the business since day one.
Keith Worboys – who also has a 75th birthday this year – has worked on the now-Gulf branded forecourt since the age of 15. His father founded the business in 1936 following a career as a mobile mechanic.
Keith runs Worboys Garage alongside his wife, Chris and son, David. Both generations handle the day-to-day operation of the forecourt and on-site repairs and MOT workshop. The garage is part of the fabric of the village and the family, who live on land adjacent to the business and are active members of the Gamlingay community.
“I’m not sure we could do anything else now!” jokes Chris. “I have been working here for 30 years myself and it would be great to keep the business going through future generations.”
“Worboys Garage is a traditional business serving a rural community. The Gulf rebrand was important to us, giving fresh impetus to the economics of our operation whilst really smartening everything up.”
“We were previously with Esso, Anglo and Repsol before becoming a white pole retailer. We had probably lost site of the impact that a strong and respected brand can offer before the switch to Gulf.”
“Now, despite considerable competition from nearby supermarkets, Worboys is defying the odds and still turning a profit even though our annual volume is under half a million litres,” adds Chris. “We are in it for the long term and our continuing success reflects strongly on the dealer support provided by Gulf and Regional Manager, Steve White, who we have worked with for 25 of the garage’s 75 years.”
