1901 - One of the original American oil companies, known as the ‘Seven Sisters’, Gulf Oil is founded during the year the modern oil industry was born on a hill in southeastern Texas - Spindletop.
1911 - Gulf leads the way in the sale of branded fuel, dispensed from barrels.
1931 - Gulf-sponsored cars start to amass an astonishing number of world speed records on the Bonneville Salt Flats
1951 - Gulf installs the world’s first commercial catalytic cracking unit at its Port Arthur, Texas, refinery complex.
1971 - The Gulf brand achieves iconic status with the launching of the film ‘Le Mans’ starring Steve McQueen. His character, Michael Delaney, races a Gulf Porsche 917 to victory at the world’s greatest endurance event.
1991 - Gulf in the UK is rebranded to the distinctive metallic blue and orange image that is still so recognisable today.
2001 - The Gulf Audi R8 of Stefan Johansson takes on all comers to win the inaugural European Le Mans Series.
2011 - Gulf Retail is the fastest growing independent fuel brand in the UK. The brand’s UK expansion continues, supported by its parent company.
