Gulf defying forecourt statistics
Number of UK stations decline again in 2009
According to the latest Retail Market Survey conducted by the Energy Institute, the number of operational forecourts in the UK fell to 9,013 in 2009. That represents a staggering loss of over 10,000 petrol filling stations in the UK since 1991 and is barely comparable to 1967's all-time high of 39,958.Sales of petrol and diesel were also down on the previous year by a combined total of 600,000 tonnes. That equated to a cross-the-board fall in volume of 25%.
"2009 was a tough year in petrol retailing and Gulf dealers did suffer volume losses but thankfully nothing like the national averages," concludes Keith Jewers, Director, Gulf Retail. "There is greater optimism in 2010 but higher prices and economic uncertainty prevail. As always we are continuing to work with our dealers to buck the trend, growing their businesses, on and off the forecourt."
