Gulf fighting falling volumes
Keith Jewers on the current market
With fuel volumes across the UK falling by as much as 30%, Keith Jewers, Director, Gulf Retail, has been speaking on factors affecting operators, as well as revealing statistics on Gulf’s own performance.
“Gulf’s volume drop statistics have varied from region to region,” he explains. “Ranging from under 12% in some areas and up to 20% in others.”
“Road closures and the Christmas retail period extending in addition to the economic doom and gloom have all had effects on disposable income.”
“Many people are now much more selective on how and when they use their cars, preferring to drive only during the morning and evening rush hours.”
“The improved fuel efficiency of many cars has also made a significant impact. Some BlueMotion cars – notably the award-winning VWs - are topping 70 MPG, with others not far behind.”
“Couple with these issues with the rise in prices and motorists just haven’t been motoring.”
“Despite this, interestingly, many of the socioeconomic factors that have seen a downturn in fuel sales are in fact boosting shop profitability. Sites that are down on forecourt sales are finding that they’re up when it comes to in-store profits.”
