Diesels outperform petrol cars

Fuel efficiency a priority for motorists

The importance of fuel efficiency to UK motorists has been highlighted in new figures published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

They show that diesel car registrations accounted for 50.6% of the market in July while alternative fuel vehicles also achieved a record share with 1.4%.

Petrol car registrations were considerably down as they were outdone by diesels for the first time.

In total, new car registrations remained up 163,004 units (15.1%), for 2010 as a whole.

"We're definitely seeing a change on the forecourts," explains Steve White, Regional Manager, South. "Where many sites were seeing a 60/40 split in favour of unleaded, the gap is now closing, some operators have readjusted their tankage and we're expecting diesel to excel for the foreseeable future."
