Motorists leaded up the garden path
Bayford & Co Ltd, the UK's only nationwide distributor of leaded fuels, has confirmed that it will continue to supply its low sulphur leaded fuels to meet public demand. This is in direct contrast to a warning by the Department for Transport of an imminent fuel crisis for drivers of older vehicles, resulting from the withdrawal of LRP. The subsequent publicity has caused much consternation amongst those motorists whose vehicles will not run properly on unleaded.
The vast majority of UK motorists operate their cars on unleaded fuels or diesel. However, an estimated 1.5 million motorists - almost all with old or classic vehicles - are reliant upon leaded petrol. In 2000, Bayford was awarded an official license with European derogation to supply a limited quantity of low sulphur leaded fuel to satisfy demand in the UK.
Jonathan Turner, Managing Director, Bayford & Co Ltd: "We currently supply low sulphur leaded fuels to some 150 forecourts across the UK and will continue to do so whilst demand exists. Whether intentional or not, recent comments from both the AA and Department for Transport are misleading and have resulted in press comment that a fuel crisis for owners of old cars is imminent. This is most definitely not the case and we wish to reassure anyone whose vehicle was designed to run on leaded fuels that we shall continue to serve their needs."
